Education
We are passionate about the Kinbaku we do. Therefore, we share our experiences and make our knowledge available to others, from absolute beginners to advanced students. As a couple tying together for more than 10 years now, we want to address some specific points in our teaching:
- Kinbaku is for us about creating a shared experience between two people – it is not just about techniques
- Hence, mastering the technique is essential to let go of it and creating an emotional scene
- Both partners in ropes – Rigger and Rope-bottom – have an active role to create the scene, there is no „passive“ partner
Therefore as a basic principle of our teaching, we aim to teach both partners in rope equally – with complementary content. Alexander will help the Riggers to better their tying and to find strategies for more presence and better communication in ropes. Bringing together her love for Kinbaku with her professional background in Sexological Bodywork, Natasha developed a structure for rope bottoms to deepen their experience in ropes and make it more internal, conscious, and safe – for a better experience of the tying.
We are available for private coaching or tuition in our studio6x6 in Berlin as well as for invitations to interested communities.
Formats
There are different modalities we offer to interact with our students or coachees. We prefer to work one-on-one with individuals or couples in a private setting over the usual workshop, as this allows for tailoring both content and methods to your specific situation. Only in private lessons, we can respond individually to your wishes. Depending on your current status, we give you exactly the input you need to get to a new level in your bondage.
This is the best and most effective way to discover Kinbaku. This is how we became better, this is how we still learn.
For the technique – and non-technique concepts – we developed didactics in our elements system, accompanying our students from the very first steps as absolute beginners to free and creative adaptations in advanced applications, according to their intentions and desires. This content is available in workshop settings but also will be the foundation for individual coaching with a technical focus, e.g. in a Private Intensive weekend for a couple.
We are also available, as individuals or as a couple, for private coaching around topics like session building, polarity, dynamics, consent, and communication in (and outside) the ropes.
This resource is for people who like being in ropes and want to grow. You will find there Natasha's workshops/coaching offers, writings, downloadable resources, and links to other practitioners.
The private lessons are the turbo to tie faster, more safe, and thus really focussed on your partner’s emotions. It does not matter which level you currently are: we will help you to improve and find your way to Kinbaku.
Techniques & teaching system: The Elements
For us it is essential to teach Kinbaku as a holistic system, covering technique and non-technique, body and mind, theory and practice – covering both history and contemporary developments. Curating the content and guiding our students through the complex matter, we structured the shapeless content into a system of Elements, inspired by the classical Western Alchemic system. Like Alchemy, Kinbaku is a transformative practice. It’s about initiating inner processes, developing oneself, and changing something to the positive. The rope becomes a kind of a philosopher’s stone. In the rope, with the rope, you cannot hide – at least not, when you approach Semenawa with honesty. It might change you and your relationship forever.
Shu-ha-ri (守破離) is a Japanese concept that describes the stages of learning to mastery. It roughly translates to “to keep, to fall, to break away” or “follow the rules, break the rules, transcend the rules”.
The system allows the Riggers to practice the principles and patterns as well as for the Rope-bottoms to develop the relevant somatic skills. It allows us to learn the necessary technical and non-technical principles quickly and consecutively building on each other. For this, we have developed a method to combine theory and practice in catchy exercises for both partners in ropes. Our goal is to give you the best tools for your play.
Our experience from previous professions as much as our studies in martial arts / somatic practices feed into our system to ensure your fast progress. However the most important principle – practice yourself a lot! – we cannot take you from the shoulders!
Shu (守): Obey the traditional wisdom, learning fundamentals, and techniques
Complete beginners start with learning the basics (Kihon, 基本) – the fundamentals of Shibari/Kinbaku: general technical and non-technical principles, as well as simple but effective patterns, including first harnesses for the upper body and legs. Above all, they learn to apply these patterns to create a shared experience in their erotic play. Right from the beginning, we address both partners who take active, albeit different, roles. On the bottom’s side, we introduce the foundational skills of placing attention to the body and strengthening your core. We will emphasize movement, control, as well as (non-verbal) communication, emotional and physical limits, as well as intention-based consent.
On the next level, we lay out the form (Kata, 型 or 形) – the basic exercises and practices to learn Kinbaku.
In EARTH, both partners are laying down the fundament for a more challenging, erotic bondage. The riggers build on the fundamentals and apply the learned techniques and principles – creating harnesses and impactful positions. The bottoms need to practice patience most of all whilst the riggers practice and master basic techniques.
Then on the WATER level, both partners need to become more flexible and adaptable, when adding gravity and dealing with the iconic suspensions and progressions. Riggers learn how to manage ropes and the body safely and effectively, even in challenging situations. For Bottoms, the topics are placement of attention and communication.
After passing through these three stages, the students understand – and embody – the basic form. They can tie effectively and execute the standard figures in semi- or full suspensions safely and sustainable for their partner. Rope Bottoms have the tools to allow higher impact into their bodies as well as are enabled to feel and communicate their limits.
That’s the standard, obvious, on the surface: “Omote”. There is not yet any place for the student’s own creativity – nor any innovation (other than the didactics) from our end. But we insist – as the traditional Japanese teaching systems do – that this standard is the basis for all creative adaptations that follow. Without the basis – there is no creation.
Ha (破) – detachment and breaking with the traditional forms to find new approaches to Kinbaku
When the fundamentals and basic forms, shapes, or positions are understood and embodied – we can detach from them to unleash our creative impulse.
On this level, we deconstruct the patterns, and we experiment with the forms. The basic question will be: What is your intention? Why do you want to do this? Why do you want this getting done to you?
On the FIRE level, we address how to use more complex patterns and challenging positions to create an impact on the somatic body of the person in ropes. We put the body under pressure! Rope-bottoms learn to grow stamina in challenging positions as well as understand their limits or how to distinguish between „good“ and „bad“ pain and how to deal with it.
When new freedom is gained, your bondage and your expression in ropes can become creative again. You have all the advanced tools for how to develop a scene and how to create individual aesthetics.
On the AIR level we can lab with concepts like MA: Space, Time, and Creation or can investigate the mythos of the Showa era, and our own erotic phantasies can be acted out in traditional Kinbaku aesthetics.
FIRE and AIR cannot be taught – it can just be shown. Our path is not your path. Nothing is obvious. The truth is hidden behind the surface: “Ura”
Workshop Offer
We gave our first (mini) workshop in autumn 2016. Since 2017 we taught regularly in Berlin and internationally at Ellipsis Rope Events Rotterdam, Shibari Lounge Antwerp, Kinbaku Lounge Copenhagen, Subspace Studio Prague, Shibari Dojo Madrid, as well as at Prague Shibari Festival, Eurix, and Shibari Camp.
We developed different concepts, for beginners as much as for more advanced people eager to dive deeper into the concepts of semenawa. In our new formats – “Emerging Patterns & Pivotal Points” and “Bodies under Pressure” – we share our recent research.

In a warm and welcoming atmosphere, you get to improve your rope skills. The teaching is very well balanced between technique, feeling, body awareness, safety and playfulness. Lessons are well structured and there is even a handout to remember keypoints and harnesses 🙂 To sum up, you'll learn loads and have fun at the same time - highly recommend it.

A beautiful and special place. The workshops at Discover Kinbaku are no shallow or chaotic fast food, but well thought-of concepts with a learning theory behind it, which doesn't only cover knots and patterns, but e.g. also interpersonal dynamics, communication and the side of the rope bottoms. All in a respectful, welcoming and open atmosphere, and the team has a lot of valuable experience to share. Would love to attend more classes in the future!
